In the late 1980s a joint venture began between M.T.Agricultural of Braintree, Essex & M.J. Abbott of Dinton,Wiltshire in the design & build of tractor mounted, P.T.O.driven wheel trenchers. By the late 1990s the existing machineswere becoming outmoded & so M.J. Abbott & AardvarkEquipment developed a P.T. O. driven rock wheel trencher, TheR.W.T. 100 model, 1.0m max. depth with laser grading & acutting width of 135mm, mounted on 140 200 h.p. tractors.

The first of these machines was commissioned in Spring 2002& now has over 5 years of work behind it. Fendt tractors makethe best prime mover due to their Vario transmission & highthree point linkage lift ability.

When used in conjunction with a site dumper to take the spoilaway & a trailed gravel cart to supply backfill the machinebecomes the centrepiece in a trenching train system, digging thetrench, removing the spoil, laying the pipe or cable from the spoolon the front of the tractor & finishing off with backfill,completing the job in one pass.

The machines can be used in the sportsturf industry for drainage& irrigation work & the utility industry for ducting &cabling work. Linear work rates vary from 100m to 600m per hourdependant on the soil type & conditions.

Machines have been used successfully in sand/clay/loam soiltypes, slates, shales, limestones, sandstones, concrete &tarmac trenching jobs, but fight shy of working igneous/graniterock strata. The design & fabrications used in the machines areextremely robust & well proven.

For 2008 there is a smaller addition to the Rototrench line up,the R.W.T. 75 model 0.75m max. depth & a cutting width of135mm, P.T.O. driven, tractor mounted rock wheel trencherspecifically aimed at the Sportsturf & Amenity sectors for usewith 125h.p. tractors.
